It is a grassroots effort to connect alumni, parents and friends of Geneseo in the NYC metro area, created by volunteer alumni and hosted through the College's Alumni Council.
It's about that time of year to catch you up on all things NYC Network since our last update:
Next up: we're inviting all alumni and friends out to Red Hook to help celebrate our new digs! Join us on October 3rd for a day long celebration with a meet and greet, dance performances, and an open bar happy hour in one of the coolest spots in NYC. More info and registration here. If you want to get involved in the NYC alumni group, we always welcome help. Our network only gets stronger because of you- invite your friends, spread the word and let people know what you do as a Geneseo alum. Some of the things you can do: post job or networking opportunities that you know of on our LinkedIn page, invite your NYC friends to join our Facebook page, let us know if you can provide space (or connections to people with space) for upcoming NYC events (we ALWAYS need this), or send in your ideas for events or NYC activities that Geneseo alums might be interested in. Most of all we invite you to join in the fun! As we continue to build our Geneseo community here in NYC, we thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you soon! You can be a part of this historic moment for our college.Last week Geneseo Provost Carol Long made this incredible announcement and we couldn't wait to spread the word!
Geneseo is launching a one-of-a-kind program in Red Hook, Brooklyn- arguably one of NYC's coolest up and coming neighborhoods- with the ability to engage prospective and current students, parents and alumni right here in New York City. With the help of the NYC Alumni Committee, the Geneseo Red Hook program is gearing up to engage even more alumni and to strengthen our network with this invaluable opportunity. There is a lot to do to get the program up and running- including a launch event this fall - so stay tuned! See below for the message and tell your friends! We'll keep you posted on how you can get involved! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear NYC alumni and parents: We have news from upstate that I am eager to share with you. With support from alumnus Greg O'Connell '64 and the O'Connell Organization, Geneseo has a new home in the waterfront neighborhood that is Red Hook, Brooklyn. With space in Red Hook and a presence in New York City, our potential is endless: innovative programming and alumni & parent engagement that will strengthen Geneseo's connections with our wonderful community of influence. Project Coordinator Maddy Smith '14 is in the research phase of establishing this program, and she looks forward to meeting our NYC friends. You'll hear from her soon, but if you have questions or thoughts, please reach out: [email protected]. Visit Maddy's blog to track her progress and learn more about Red Hook. Sincerely, Carol S. Long Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Meghan is a Director in structured finance at the investment banking firm Societe Generale. She graduated from Geneseo in 1997 with a Sociology degree and minors in Biology and Environmental Science. Meghan is also an active member of the NYC Alumni Regional Committee and the Geneseo Women’s Network. Lawrence Heath (’13) spoke to her about her career and asked her advice for current students and recent graduates. Top three “money” quotes from Meghan: 1) “There were certainly analysts in the group that concentrated on being assigned to any and all deals, but then did not provide a consistent or correct product. Putting my head down and providing thorough and diligent work proved to be a better model than being staffed on everything without producing any substance. Over time the lack of deep product understanding weeded a lot of my peers out.” 2) “You cannot undervalue the experience you’ll gain by putting your head down and working hard.” 3) “Try to find somebody (without hounding them) who can help guide you for your career. It doesn’t have to be one person. You need to be open to looking at a few people who are willing to help you move forward.” Last year, Alyssa Anderson Gonlag (Class of 2005), introduced us to a fabulous group that she works with, Girls on the Run. This past December a hearty group from Geneseo volunteered to help out at Girls on the Run's 5K race for 3rd through 8th grade girls in the NYC area. GOTR is back in action on June 20th and you can help by joining the Geneseo team! What is Girls on the Run? GOTR is a mentoring program for girls grades 3-8. The girls meet twice a week and learn life skills through fun and engaging lessons, culminating in an end of season 5K Race that's all about confidence, character and compassion. The 5K is family friendly event that is open to the public. How can I help? As the girls' season completes this June, GOTR needs volunteers to help as running buddies for the girls during their race, as well as general day-of volunteers to help give out water, medals and smiles, or general 5K runners to run this non timed fun run. This is an outdoor race on Randall's Island in December! That's why, after the race, we will be gathering as a group somewhere nearby to get some drinks and/or (very hot!) coffee and to catch up with each other as a group. More info to come on this.
